BMW drivetrain malfunction: full power not available

The message on the screen does not name the cause by itself. The fault code stored by the engine control unit does.

What does this warning mean?

On a BMW the warning shown as “Drivetrain malfunction”, often with “Full drive power not available” or “Drive moderately”, tells you the engine control unit (DME) has detected a problem and limited power. It is a general warning: dozens of different causes, from boost pressure to ignition, from fuel pressure to a sensor fault, show the same text.

So the first step is to read the code, not to guess. When the DME raises the warning it stores the reason as a six-digit fault code; once that is read, it is clear which system the problem is in.

What to do when the warning appears

Lift off and pull over somewhere safe without loading the engine. If the engine warning lamp is flashing, or an overheating or oil-pressure warning accompanies it, switch the engine off. Even if the warning disappears after the ignition is cycled, the code stays in memory, so it can still be read afterwards.

Once you have read the code, go to the relevant page from the table above; each one covers the meaning, the common causes and the order to check them in.

Read the code yourself, free

  1. 1 Install MOSTUNED on your iPhone.
  2. 2 Connect to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter.
  3. 3 Open “Fault Codes” under Diagnostics; stored codes are listed with their descriptions.
  4. 4 Note the code, fix the cause, then clear it from the same screen and read again to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What does BMW drivetrain malfunction mean?

It is a general warning that the engine control unit has detected a problem and limited power to protect the engine. The actual cause is shown by the fault code stored in memory.

Can I keep driving with a drivetrain malfunction warning?

If the warning is on its own, the car drives at reduced power; get where you are going gently and have the code read. If the engine warning lamp is flashing, or there is an overheating or oil-pressure warning, stop the car.

The warning went away by itself. Is the problem gone?

The warning disappearing does not mean the cause has gone; most faults appear under particular conditions. The code remains in memory, and reading it shows what triggered it.

Can I read the code without going to a workshop?

Yes. Fault reading and clearing are free in the MOSTUNED app; an iPhone and an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter are all you need.

What if the warning appears on a tuned car?

Read the code first. Our calibrations leave the engine’s protection systems in place; the warning shows one of those protections has caught a problem. Send us the code and a Logger recording if you have one on WhatsApp and we will pin down the cause together. You can return to stock software from the app at any time.
