Super-knocking fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.
Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 152108 | Super-knocking, cylinder 1: Fuel injection deactivation |
| 152208 | Super-knocking, cylinder 2: Fuel injection deactivation |
| 152308 | Super-knocking, cylinder 3: Fuel injection deactivation |
| 152408 | Super-knocking, cylinder 4: Fuel injection deactivation |
Super-knocking is the mixture igniting by itself before the spark; it occurs at low rpm under high load and is technically called low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI). Unlike normal knock it cannot be prevented by retarding ignition. When the DME detects it, it temporarily switches off injection on that cylinder and stores this code. The code shows the protection working.
Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fuel quality | Low-octane or poor-quality fuel is the most common trigger. |
| Engine oil | Use BMW-approved oil of the correct specification; unsuitable oil increases the tendency to pre-ignite. |
| Combustion-chamber deposits | Deposits built up in short-trip use create hot spots. |
| Driving style | Full throttle in a high gear at low rpm is the condition most favourable to pre-ignition. |
A one-off entry shows the protection did its job. If it repeats, review your fuel and oil, avoid full throttle at low rpm and have the cause found.
Our calibrations keep knock and super-knock protection in place; we do not touch that safety net. Each power level is prepared for a specific fuel quality, and we state it clearly before you buy. On a car run on the right fuel and the right oil, the calibration works within the engine’s protection limits.

Clearing removes the entry, not the cause. If the cause remains, the code returns when the conditions occur again. The right order is: read the code, fix the cause, clear it and read again to confirm.
You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.

Send us your car model, the code and a Logger recording if you have one on WhatsApp and we will look at it together. Related codes: 152208, 152308, 152408.
