Remapping means recalculating the calibration tables inside the engine control unit (DME/ECU) around your car's hardware and fuel. Here is what actually changes, where the hard limits sit, and how we work.
On a modern BMW turbo engine there is no single "power setting". Output is the combined result of several hundred interlinked tables. A calibration mainly deals with target torque, boost pressure, ignition advance, mixture targets and the protection tables that bound all of them.
The critical point: pulling on one link of that chain while leaving the rest alone does not produce power, it just drives the ECU into its own limiters. Raise torque demand without updating the torque model and the engine continually pulls itself back; raise boost without aligning ignition and you widen the knock window.
Our approach is to align the chain as a whole and leave the protection tables alone. Knock detection, thermal and pressure limits stay exactly where they are — the calibration works below those limits, never above them.
The right stage is decided by your hardware. A bigger number is not a better result.

Recalibrated around a downpipe, intake or intercooler. Pointless without that hardware. Stage 2 details
Builds that do not fit a standard package: unusual hardware combinations, a different fuel, or a specific driving character. Runs over several datalog sessions.
Whether a calibration is good is not settled by a dyno figure. It is settled by what the car does on a real road. The datalog we ask for before sign-off is read for knock correction (ignition retard), the gap between requested and actual boost, air-fuel ratio deviation, intake air temperature, and torque limiter interventions.
If any of those sit outside the expected window, the calibration is revised. We do not call a job finished without seeing data — two cars with the same engine code behave differently depending on fuel quality and how the hardware has aged.

Not when the protection tables are left intact and the stage matches the hardware. Damage comes from calibrations that disable safety limits, or from loading a map the hardware cannot support.
At a steady cruise it usually does not change, and can improve slightly, because less throttle is needed for the same speed. Driven hard, it will of course increase.
Yes. Because the original file is backed up, you can return to stock whenever you want.
A calibration that leaves emissions hardware untouched should not cause a problem. Builds involving hardware changes are subject to local regulations, and road legality remains the owner's responsibility.
