BMW Stage 2 remap

Stage 2 is a calibration for a car whose hardware has changed. Once exhaust back pressure drops or the intake side is altered, the assumptions behind the stock calibration no longer hold — and the software needs to know that.

What hardware does Stage 2 need?

The usual combination is a sports or decatted downpipe with a matching exhaust system. A performance intake and a larger intercooler often follow. As long as the turbo and injectors remain standard, the stage is still called Stage 2.

An important warning: do not load a Stage 2 calibration before the hardware is fitted. Back pressure stays higher than the map expects, the requested boost is never reached, and the system spends its time correcting. With no hardware, the right answer is Stage 1.

Removing a catalytic converter is subject to emissions regulations and these vary by country. Road legality is the owner's responsibility, and we would ask you to read our disclaimer on this.

What changes at Stage 2

New flow assumptions

With back pressure reduced, boost and torque targets are recalculated for the new flow characteristics.

Ignition realigned

Advance curves are adjusted for the changed charge conditions while preserving knock margin.

Catalyst and sensor logic

The relevant monitoring logic and warning behaviour are handled to match the hardware.

Thermal management

If the intercooler has changed, intake-temperature-based pull-back thresholds are updated.

Datalog verification

Datalogs matter more at Stage 2 — only data shows how the hardware really behaves.

Return to stock

The original backup is retained, so you can go back before a service visit.

Stage 2 questions

Can I move from Stage 1 to Stage 2?

Yes. Once the hardware is fitted the calibration is updated — you do not start over.

I only changed the exhaust. Do I need Stage 2?

If only the rear silencer changed, usually not — the downpipe is what really affects flow. Tell us exactly what you have fitted and we will decide together.

What if I upgrade the turbo?

That is no longer Stage 2; it becomes a custom calibration and runs over several datalog sessions.

Will I get a check engine light?

Not expected when the calibration is built correctly for the hardware. Where emissions monitoring must be retained and the catalyst has been removed, a warning can appear — we discuss that with you beforehand.
