Electric wastegate fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.
Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 123401 | Electrical wastegate valve, adaptation: Cold start not learned |
| 123411 | Electrical wastegate valve, adaptation: Limit position open not detected |
| 123412 | Electrical wastegate valve, adaptation: Limit position closed not detected |
| 123201 | Wastegate valve, activation: Fault suspected |
On the B48’s turbo the wastegate is opened and closed by an electric actuator. The DME learns the actuator’s fully open and fully closed positions (adaptation) to control boost precisely. If the actuator cannot find those end positions, or the learning does not complete, these codes are stored.
Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Play in the linkage | Wear in the wastegate arm and shaft makes the closed position hard to find; a rattle when cold is the typical sign. |
| Actuator | The electric actuator’s motor or position sensor may have failed. |
| Wiring and connector | The connector next to the turbo is exposed to high heat; a poor contact causes intermittent faults. |
| Incomplete adaptation | After a battery disconnect or a part change the learning has to be repeated. |
The car drives, but boost may fluctuate or power may be limited. If a boost-pressure code is stored alongside it, the wastegate side is examined first.
Tuning relies on correct wastegate adaptation; a turbo with play in its linkage cannot hold target boost. After engine software is written the DME relearns its adaptations, and the adaptation reset in the MOSTUNED app starts that process from a clean baseline.

Clearing removes the entry, not the cause. If the cause remains, the code returns when the conditions occur again. The right order is: read the code, fix the cause, clear it and read again to confirm.
You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.

Send us your car model, the code and a Logger recording if you have one on WhatsApp and we will look at it together. Related codes: 123411, 123412, 123201.
