BMW fault code 140010: combustion misfire
Misfire fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.

What does 140010 mean?
The DME watches for tiny irregularities in crankshaft speed. When a cylinder does not do its share of the work the crank slows for an instant, and that is counted as a misfire. The third and fourth digits give the cylinder: 1401 is cylinder one, 1402 two, 1403 three, 1404 four. Codes starting 1400 refer to several cylinders.

| Spark plug | A worn plug or one with an opened-up gap is the most common cause. Check when the plugs were last changed. |
| Ignition coil | With a single-cylinder misfire, swap the coil with a neighbouring cylinder; if the code moves with the coil, the coil is at fault. |
| Injector | A restricted or leaking injector upsets that cylinder’s mixture. |
| Vacuum leak or fuel pressure | When several cylinders misfire, the cause usually lies in a shared system. |
| Mechanical | Loss of compression is rare and is measured once the other causes are ruled out. |
Can you drive with this code?
If the engine warning lamp is flashing, or an injection-switched-off code is stored, stop without loading the engine and have the cause found. Continuous misfiring damages the catalytic converter.
How it relates to tuning
At raised power the ignition system works harder; a worn plug that copes at factory output will misfire at higher boost. That is why we ask about the plugs before tuning and work on cars with up-to-date servicing.
