BMW fault code 1D2008: map thermostat jammed open

Map thermostat fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.

Codes in this family

Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.

CodeMeaning
1D2008Map thermostat: jammed open
1D2009Map thermostat: Jammed closed

What does 1D2008 mean?

On the B48 the thermostat is electronically controlled; the DME runs the engine at different temperatures depending on driving conditions. If the engine does not reach operating temperature in the expected time, the thermostat is judged to be stuck open and 1D2008 is stored. 1D2009 is the opposite: the thermostat is not opening and the engine runs too hot.

Most common causes

Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.

CauseWhat to check
The thermostat itselfThe most common cause is a thermostat mechanically stuck open; it is replaced together with its housing.
Coolant temperature sensorIf the sensor reads low, the DME thinks the engine is not warming up.
Coolant levelLow coolant or air in the system upsets temperature measurement and circulation.

Can you drive with this code?

With 1D2008 the car can be driven; the heater warms up late and consumption rises, but running the engine cold for long increases wear, so do not put it off. With 1D2009 or an overheating warning, stop the car safely.

How it relates to tuning

Tuning does not cause a thermostat fault. Before writing engine software or measuring performance we make sure the engine can reach operating temperature; on an engine running cold the DME limits power by itself and the tune does not deliver.

Read the code yourself, free

  1. 1 Install MOSTUNED on your iPhone.
  2. 2 Connect to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter.
  3. 3 Open “Fault Codes” under Diagnostics; stored codes are listed with their descriptions.
  4. 4 Note the code, fix the cause, then clear it from the same screen and read again to confirm.

Can I drive with code 1D2008?

Does clearing 1D2008 fix the problem?

Clearing removes the entry, not the cause. If the cause remains, the code returns when the conditions occur again. The right order is: read the code, fix the cause, clear it and read again to confirm.

How do I read code 1D2008?

You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.

Does tuning cause this code?

Tuning does not cause a thermostat fault. Before writing engine software or measuring performance we make sure the engine can reach operating temperature; on an engine running cold the DME limits power by itself and the tune does not deliver.
