BMW fault code 190F08: fuel tank ventilation fault

Tank ventilation fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.

Codes in this family

Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.

CodeMeaning
190F08Fuel tank ventilation system: Malfunction
190302Fuel tank ventilation system and purge air system: Micro-leak greater than 0.5 mm detected
191001Tank vent valve, activation: Short circuit to B+
191002Tank vent valve, activation: Short circuit to ground
191004Tank vent valve, activation: Open circuit

What does 190F08 mean?

Fuel vapour from the tank is collected in a charcoal canister, and the tank vent valve feeds it to the engine in a controlled way. The DME tests the system for leaks and checks the valve. If it finds a leak or a valve fault, these codes are stored.

Most common causes

Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.

CauseWhat to check
Fuel capA cap not fully closed or with a worn seal is the simplest cause of a micro-leak code.
Tank vent valveA valve stuck open also affects the mixture; for electrical codes, the valve and wiring are checked.
HosesCracked or loose hoses between the valve and the intake.

Can you drive with this code?

It usually does not affect driving; if there is a fuel smell or a mixture code alongside it, have it checked without delay.

How it relates to tuning

Tuning does not touch the tank ventilation system. Because a valve stuck open can upset the mixture, we ask for this code to be cleared before tuning.

Read the code yourself, free

  1. 1 Install MOSTUNED on your iPhone.
  2. 2 Connect to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter.
  3. 3 Open “Fault Codes” under Diagnostics; stored codes are listed with their descriptions.
  4. 4 Note the code, fix the cause, then clear it from the same screen and read again to confirm.

Does clearing 190F08 fix the problem?

How do I read code 190F08?

You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.
