BMW fault code 180001: catalytic converter efficiency too low

Catalytic converter efficiency fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.

Codes in this family

Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.

CodeMeaning
180001Catalytic converter: Efficiency too low

What does 180001 mean?

There is an oxygen sensor before and after the catalytic converter. A healthy converter stores oxygen, so the rear sensor signal is calm. When the rear sensor starts to swing like the front one, the DME decides the converter is not doing its job and stores 180001.

Most common causes

Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.

CauseWhat to check
Sport or catless downpipeIf the factory converter has been removed or replaced with a high-flow unit, this code is the expected result.
Aged converterOn high-mileage cars, or cars driven with misfires for a long time, the converter loses efficiency.
Exhaust leakA leak ahead of the rear sensor lets outside air reach it and distorts the reading.
Rear oxygen sensorThe sensor itself may have aged; its data is checked first.

Can you drive with this code?

It does not affect how the car drives; the engine warning lamp comes on. If a misfire code is stored alongside it, fix the misfire first, because unburnt fuel damages the converter.

How it relates to tuning

On a car with the stock exhaust, tuning does not produce this code. On cars with a changed downpipe we prepare the Stage 2 calibration for the hardware and discuss with you beforehand how catalyst monitoring will behave. Removing a catalytic converter is subject to emissions law; follow local rules for road use.

Read the code yourself, free

  1. 1 Install MOSTUNED on your iPhone.
  2. 2 Connect to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter.
  3. 3 Open “Fault Codes” under Diagnostics; stored codes are listed with their descriptions.
  4. 4 Note the code, fix the cause, then clear it from the same screen and read again to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What does BMW fault code 180001 mean?

Does clearing 180001 fix the problem?

Clearing removes the entry, not the cause. If the cause remains, the code returns when the conditions occur again. The right order is: read the code, fix the cause, clear it and read again to confirm.

How do I read code 180001?

You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.

Does tuning cause this code?

On a car with the stock exhaust, tuning does not produce this code. On cars with a changed downpipe we prepare the Stage 2 calibration for the hardware and discuss with you beforehand how catalyst monitoring will behave. Removing a catalytic converter is subject to emissions law; follow local rules for road use.
