Rear oxygen sensor fault. What the code means, its most common causes and what to do.
Six-digit BMW codes stored by the engine control unit (DME). The same code appears in this form in ISTA and in the MOSTUNED app.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 12A308 | Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, signal: too slow from rich to lean |
| 12AD01 | Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, signal: fixed at lean |
| 12B301 | Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, heating, activation: Short circuit to B+ |
| 12B302 | Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, heating, activation: Short circuit to ground |
The oxygen sensor behind the catalytic converter checks that the converter is working and fine-tunes the front sensor’s reading. The DME tests this sensor’s response: if the signal does not change fast enough it stores 12A308; if it reads lean all the time, 12AD01. Codes starting 12B3 concern the sensor’s heater circuit.
Top to bottom, starting with what is easiest to check.
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Aged sensor | At high mileage the sensor responds more slowly; this is the most common cause. |
| Exhaust leak | A leak ahead of the sensor draws in outside air and pushes the signal lean. |
| Wiring and connector | The wiring runs close to hot exhaust and can be damaged over time; for heater codes the wiring is checked first. |
| Changed downpipe | If the converter has changed, so has the signal the sensor sees; the calibration must match the hardware. |
It does not affect driving; the engine warning lamp comes on and emissions monitoring cannot complete. Find and fix the cause.
On a car with the stock exhaust, tuning does not affect this sensor. On cars with a downpipe we prepare the Stage 2 calibration for the hardware and discuss sensor behaviour beforehand.

Clearing removes the entry, not the cause. If the cause remains, the code returns when the conditions occur again. The right order is: read the code, fix the cause, clear it and read again to confirm.
You read it for free with the MOSTUNED app: connect your iPhone to the car with an ENET cable or WiFi-ENET adapter and open Fault Codes under Diagnostics. Bluetooth OBD (ELM327) adapters do not provide this connection.

Send us your car model, the code and a Logger recording if you have one on WhatsApp and we will look at it together. Related codes: 12AD01, 12B301, 12B302.
