FEMTO unlock — the BMW ECU lock and how it opens
If you are searching for "FEMTO unlock" you most likely own a post-June-2020 BMW and have just learned the ECU must be opened before any remap. Short answer: yes, an unlock is required; FEMTO is one of the methods; we unlock at our workshop every day and work with your car whichever method opened it.
What is a FEMTO unlock?
From mid-2020 BMW added signature verification to the engine controller (DME — MG1CS003 on these cars): every write request over OBD is checked first and rejected unless approved. The general name for opening that lock is an unlock; FEMTO is the name of one of the best-known unlock solutions on the market, and over time "femto" became shorthand for the procedure itself.
An unlock is done once and stays on the ECU. Afterwards the car accepts calibrations from compatible platforms; returning to stock does not undo the unlock, nor does it need to.
There are unlock methods other than FEMTO. For us it makes no difference: when the MOSTUNED app connects it verifies the unlock regardless of which method opened it and moves on to writing. No second unlock is needed.
