The crackle you hear on overrun comes from moving part of combustion into the exhaust. Ignition timing and throttle behaviour are altered in short bursts to produce it.
By definition a crackle map moves heat into the exhaust side. The turbo and the catalyst absorb part of that. Kept short and measured it is manageable; run constantly and aggressively, catalyst life and exhaust valve temperatures become a real concern.
So we do not build extreme crackle maps. Duration, rev range and intensity are kept bounded. If a customer wants the full gunshot setup, we explain the risks plainly and may decline to build it. A measured sound with real character is entirely possible without wearing the car out.
A crackle map is usually delivered alongside a Stage calibration, though it can be done on its own. It can also be restricted so that it is only active in certain drive modes.
A measured map is not expected to. An aggressive, constantly active one can shorten catalyst life. We stay on the measured side and tell you exactly why.
Yes — intensity and rev range can both be set. Tell us what you are after and we will get as close as we safely can.
You will, but a standard exhaust damps the effect. It becomes far more pronounced with a sports system.
Yes, the calibration can be updated to remove it, or you can return to stock.
