Servicing a tuned BMW: plugs, oil and fuel

A properly prepared tune does not strain the engine; good servicing keeps it running trouble-free for years.

Spark plugs

At higher boost the ignition system works harder. A worn plug that goes unnoticed at factory power misfires under high load. We recommend changing plugs at the manufacturer interval, preferably a little sooner.

Engine oil

Use BMW-approved oil of the correct specification and do not delay changes. Oil quality matters both for VANOS working properly and for resistance to low-speed pre-ignition.

Fuel

Use the fuel quality the calibration was prepared for. Lower-quality fuel makes the engine’s protection systems step in and costs power.

Air filter and boost hoses

A dirty air filter makes it harder for the turbo to reach target boost. Have the hoses and clamps between turbo and throttle checked at each service; a boost leak is the first problem you notice at raised power.

Frequently asked questions

Does a tuned car need more frequent servicing?

Intervals largely stay the same; sticking to the manufacturer intervals for plugs and oil, ideally a little early, is enough.
